CLIA waived is not the same as FDA 510(k) cleared
Two separate determinations, two different questions. A 510(k) clearance says the device is substantially equivalent to a legally marketed predicate. A CLIA categorization says whether the test is simple enough, with low enough risk of an erroneous result, to be run outside a laboratory by staff without laboratory science credentials. Devices are cleared first, then categorized, and FDA's default for a newly cleared test is moderate or high complexity — waived status must be earned, either automatically or through a CLIA Waiver by Application.
